The Austral Highway connects some of the most remote human settlements and provides access to some of the most pristine areas of the Chilean Patagonia. It is well worth the effort spent in "getting there" and will make for a unique and rewarding adventure.
Trips normally run between 5 and 10 days and are best suited to groups of between 4 and 12 people. Highlights include exploring native forests, hiking, horse-back riding and boating to reach some of the most important glacial fields left in the southern hemisphere, visits to remote towns and fishing villages, estancias and exploration of pristine (and threatened) lakes and rivers.
The best time of year to program a trip along the Austral Highway is between December and March. Weather is unpredictable for most of the year and this is the best window (austral summer) for maximizing the amount of sunshine. The extended daylight hours during this time also make it possible to accomplish much more than would be possible at other times of the year.
